Last night I hopped on Substack live with my homies, and excellent author peers, Leigh Stein, author of the novels Self Care and the national bestseller If You’re Seeing This It’s Meant For You, and Amran Gowani, author of Leverage for a fun, ranging conversation about all things satire.
The conversation was precipitated by an excellent piece Leigh wrote for her Substack earlier this month—a piece which both Amran and I contributed some thoughts to.
In this conversation we dive into how each of us—noted satire authors—define the genre and the conventions that determine what qualifies and what doesn’t qualify as a satire. We also get into a bit of a debate around some of those qualifiers—namely, does a satire have to be funny?
Leigh made her case, Amran broke out the dictionary, I tried to play referee.
